Radar speed guns appeared in kits of the Garland Police Department in 1958. This unit, shown in the hand of Officer Nicki Pratt, measured speed by the return times of radar waves bouncing off oncoming vehicles. Similar technology time ball speed in baseball, bowling, and tennis. Today's speed timing instruments replace radar waves with pulsed laser lights.
